This year will be devoted to the study of the “Science of Sound”.
The students will be exploring the why’s and how’s of sound production through experimentation and observation.
There are certain items that you will need to provide for your children’s experiments:
1 roll of beige paper tape
(masking or painter’s tape)about ¾
to 1” wide (no blue tape please, it does not have the sticking
power of the other... THIS ITEM IS DUE IMMEDIATELY
*** 5 rulers of different materials and shapes
*** 5 forks of different sizes, thickness, and metal content
*** THESE ITEMS WILL NOT BE DUE UNTIL THE NEW YEAR, TWO WEEKS NOTICE WILL BE GIVEN. PLEASE CHECK THIS SITE FOR DETAILS.
We will need a full size PRINGLES can for each child so I am asking anyone with extra cans to send them in to help students who may have trouble finding one. In addition, we are also looking for the round, paper containers, that are found in Laughing Cow cheese products. If you, or your friends and family, use this type of product, please send in the empty paper containers.
We will begin the year by looking at sound science through the eyes of early cultures such as the early Native Americans. Our studies in music class will piggy-back the Social Studies lessons of the regular classroom. This reinforcement and enrichment will continue for the entire year. Video presentations of authentic Native Americans Pow Wows, dances, and fables will allow the students a close up view of tribal instruments, songs, and dances. The children will learn about how tribal instruments were constructed out of natural materials and how native craftsmen duplicate these instruments today. If time permits, we will construct similar instruments using materials that we find in our environment.
A variety of factors will determine how many experiments we will be able to do, so if you wish to stockpile some of the household items that we may need, it will save frantic searching the day of class. I am not sure if they will all be needed, but I will give at least 2 weeks notice before the experiment stating which items they will need.
