The academic success of each child within our parish is of paramount importance to our school, faculty, and all our organizations. When a student of the parish is unable to meet the minimum standards to pass a subject and fails, our school must pursue remedial action to help the student pass.
St. Andrew’s Youth Ministry/CYO supports the mission statement of St. Andrew School to foster the development of the whole child in collaboration with the family and the Saint Andrew community. The remedial action requested by our school includes the assurance that sufficient time is available to make the required academic commitment. Therefore, in the event that a subject is not passed, the student will be suspended from his/her interscholastic team on the day following the distribution of the progress report or the semester report card. But also, St. Andrew Students must realize that behavior incidents that result in suspension from school will prohibit the student from playing and practicing.
If a student is suspended for academic or behavioral reasons, the student may not attend practice or participate in games. The initial period of suspension is expected to last for a minimum of two weeks and will continue until the student-athlete has demonstrated progress in the subject. The student may return to competition any time after the initial two weeks if rapid progress is made. Hence, the student will not have to wait until the next report card and his/her place on the team will be held open until he/she can return.
This policy is intended to support our academic mission. It is not intended to be disciplinary action. Interscholastic competition demands a tremendous time commitment. It is hoped that by relieving this demand, sufficient time can be devoted to homework, including studying, written work, and projects.
The Principal, through the faculty representative on the Youth Ministry/CYO Board, will notify the Board President or Athletic Director when a student cannot play sports for academic reasons. In the event that this policy must be enforced, the coach, parents, and student will be informed. Your understanding and cooperation in endorsing this policy and assuring that our academic mission remains our priority is essential.
